What Financial Literacy Actually Means
Real world financial education for the Caribbean and our diaspora. No jargon, no shame, no overwhelm. Learn to budget, save, invest, manage debt, and build real wealth, one confident step at a time.
Financial literacy has become one of those phrases everyone uses but few people explain. So let’s make it simple.
Financial literacy is your ability to make informed decisions about money. That’s it.
It’s not about becoming a stock market expert, reading financial reports for fun, or training to be an accountant. It’s about understanding enough to make good decisions in real life. Can you create a budget? Do you understand how debt works? Can you compare loans, build savings, and grasp the basics of investing? Do you know how to prepare for retirement, or how taxes affect your income? That’s financial literacy.
The OECD, an international organization that sets global standards on financial education, describes financial literacy as a combination of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviours that help people make sound financial decisions and improve their financial well-being. In other words, financial literacy isn’t just what you know. It’s what you do.
You can know that saving is important and still never save. You can understand debt and still misuse credit. Knowledge matters, but behaviour matters too.
That’s why Financial.ish focuses on both: the practical side of money and the emotional side of money. Because money isn’t just numbers. Money is stress. It’s opportunity, freedom, relationships, behaviour.
The more we understand that, the better decisions we make. And better decisions create better outcomes. Not overnight, but over time.
